Rob Burrow, Leeds Rhinos and Great Britain Rugby League Star, Dies at 41
Rob Burrow, the Leeds Rhinos legend and Great Britain rugby league star, has passed away at the age of 41 at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield. The celebrated sportsman was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2019, just two weeks after retiring from a stellar 17-year career.
Burrow’s career was marked by remarkable achievements, including eight Super League Grand Finals, three World Club Challenges, and two Challenge Cups. Known for his fearless performances and dedication, he was a vital part of Leeds Rhinos’ golden generation.
The Rhinos paid tribute to Burrow in a heartfelt statement:
“Rob inspired the nation with his courageous battle against Motor Neurone Disease since his diagnosis in December 2019. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, after becoming ill earlier this week.”
Burrow’s legacy extends beyond the rugby field. Alongside his close friend and teammate Kevin Sinfield, he raised over £15 million for MND charities, becoming a beacon of hope and awareness for the disease. In recognition of their extraordinary efforts, both were awarded CBEs in 2024 by Prince William, who praised their “phenomenal” contributions.
Fans and friends gathered at Leeds Civic Hall to honor Burrow, with tributes from notable figures like Jamie Jones-Buchanan, MND Association CEO Tanya Curry, and Leeds City Council leader James Lewis. The funeral procession, lined with supporters in Rhinos shirts, included a poignant stop at Featherstone Lions’ ground, where Burrow first played junior rugby.
“Rob’s determination and spirit, even in the face of MND, were a reflection of the man he was,” the Rhinos’ statement continued. “He never accepted limits; he always found a way to achieve greatness. He will remain an inspiration to us all.”
Burrow leaves behind his wife, Lindsay, and their three children, Macy, Maya, and Jackson. His indomitable spirit, both on and off the field, will forever inspire a world that dares to dream.
May he rest in peace.
